Going In Style is remake of the 1979 movie about three lifelong friends; Willie, Joe and Albert (Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Alan Arkin) who after over thirty years of active service are faced with harsh reality of retirement with no pension or healthcare because the company they worked for was going belly up. Confronted  with a bleak future, the trio hatch a daring plan to rob the very bank threatening to foreclose their properties.

Zach Braff whom I fondly remember as JD from the Series Scrubs directs this quirky film about camaraderie between old timers who are hard done by the system they so loyally served for years. There isn’t anything particularly special about this movie but the chemistry and comedic timing between Freeman, Caine, Arkin was brilliant and awesome and shows why they are veterans in the industry. Even though they turned to larceny (which is a criminal offence) to get back at the system that screwed them over, they were so endearing to the audience that we almost felt that their criminal actions were permissible. That’s how convincing they were!

Significantly, this movie exemplifies the fears of many a people, and that is the fear of getting old and having nothing to show for it because they have been royally screwed out of the measly pension accumulated through the years. Sadly, this is a reality especially in a country like Nigeria where someone will steal billions of Naira of retirees’ funds and get off with nothing but a slap on the wrist.

Not to overthink this movie though, it’s a capricious and feel good movie with a whiff of social satire especially on the financial sector and it does make for good entertainment. It’s still showing in Nigerian cinemas like GDC Abuja and Lagos so you can just get your movie tickets here and go have a blast.
