While trying to come to terms with his loss, he is informed that he has been appointed as the guardian of his brother’s 16-year-old son, and things never remained the same.

Nominated for 6 Academy Awards, this is the movie that catapults Casey into the big league. His performance as a brooding melancholic handyman was extraordinary. Many people will not understand how difficult it is to pull off being a character that says little and in the little that he says, so much bitterness is expressed.  In the real world, we see a lot of people who are bitter, cold and unresponsive and we characterize them as snubs without understanding what they have been through, or going through. I have been guilty of that and it is something I struggle with but I try not to be judgmental and just accept everyone as they are…expect its pretty obvious that the person is just being an ass (a hoofed mammal of the horse family).

There was one peculiar thing about this movie and that has got to do with the way it was edited. The transition between scenes were by jump cuts, which were really abrupt and kinda weird but somehow appealed to me because this editing style allowed them to introduce flashbacks which though disruptive, gave the movie body.

To make the movie even eerier, there was little or no background music. There was just this unnerving silence that is interrupted by humming and even when there was music, there was just a piano and some strings which gave a foreboding of even more tragedy ahead.

That being said, if you aren’t really into deep movies and you just want to be entertained, then this is not the movie for you. There were times when the movie just kept stretching and you couldn’t see where it was heading.

Manchester by the Sea is a pretty good movie and is nominated for a lot of awards basically because of Casey’s acting and ramps an 8.0/10 score on my awesome-o-metre.

Have yourself great day today!

Argo was a huge success and Affleck’s intention was to build on that success by directing a deep thriller but sadly this one doesn’t turn out quite as he expected. For one, the character of Joe Coughlin lacked any real charisma and there is this constant feeling that the movie isn’t delivering any real oomph. Maybe it’s just me but I am getting tired of Affleck’s acting style. I think it’s time to show some real versatility and be something different? Joe’s character aside, even the other characters are shallow. Let’s take Zoe Saldana’s character as Graciella Corrales a Cuban rum lord- a role that held so much promise but is somehow relegated to a peripheral afterthought.

However, the movie wasn’t all bad. I particularly enjoyed the rival gang shootout scene. I also enjoyed the car chase between the cops and the escaping bandits because of the ancient cars used which they somehow managed to maneuver like modern vehicles. Another thing I liked was the details in recreating the 1920’s. It was really in-depth and detailed.

One thing I did take away from this movie is that you cannot collect a mobster’s woman and expect to live a happy life…it’s just not possible. Talking about women, Affleck’s character understood that a woman’s heart is as deep as an ocean with no bottom. He learnt that a woman can lie in your bed telling you how much she loves you while plotting your death. I am sure Soma from Big Brother Nigeria can testify to this.

Ben Affleck’s intention was to create a gangster thriller in the mold of Godfather and maybe snatch an Oscar but due to the poor character development will not allow it to be great. Ben Affleck is no doubt a great director exemplified by the car chases and the hotel shoot out but is he an outstanding actor? I have my doubts, so I think it’s best if he just sticks to his directors chair for a while.

Getting lost at a young age is one hell of a scary situation to be in because you are suddenly thrust into an unknown environment and with no familiar faces. I remember one time when I was a kid and went shopping with my mum at the Jos Main Market and getting lost, I was scared to death and the familiar sight of my mum looking for me was the best sight…that is until a slap distorted my sight and memory. What I am trying to say is that getting lost in the big city and being separated from family is a traumatic experience and this movie managed to highlight the dangers of a kid getting lost.

The real fascinating thing about this film for me was its simplicity. There were no intricate shots or camera angles or exceptional acting but it was just a simple plot telling a simple story shot in a simple way. Upon further investigation I discovered that it was Garth Davis directorial debut which made it all the more impressive as his style isn’t polluted with all the over complications of modern films. However, I must warn that this style doesn’t suit all types of movies and I hope he can evolve while staying true to this style.

However, I could not shake the feeling that this was one big marketing campaign for Google Earth. But upon investigation, I found out it was to aid a campaign for missing kids in India because apparently millions of kids go missing there and are never found again which is a very sad situation and the authorities and the world need to pay close attention to this.

The conclusion of the movie is one to rip your emotions to shreds and you would be excused for shedding a tear or two. I had chills on my arms when I saw the footage of the characters portrayed in the film. It was all in all a good movie and I am really happy that it’s been winning awards and even nominated for an Oscar.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id="Videos"][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text="WATCH OFFICIAL TRAILER HERE" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_empty_space height="25px"][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_video link="Aug 25, 2016 - Uploaded by Movieclips Trailers" el_width="70"][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height="35px"][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

These two L.A dreamers fall in love but their love is threatened by their passion for their respective arts.

I have a confession to make. I am not a fan of musicals, I have always been like that. I know I am going to get some stick for saying this, but as a kid I didn’t like “Sound of Music”. I could not understand why these people would just burst into song instead of kicking but like Rambo and Commando.

You see ehn, I am not one to join in bandwagonery (is that even a word?) by endorsing a movie simply because everyone said it was great and it’s nominated for plenty Oscars, but I will tell you this; La La Land was art. Agreed I am not be a fan of musicals but I recognize hard work and artistry when I see it.  I can only imagine the countless hours of rehearsals of the singing and dance choreography but the end result was fantastic!

The characters of Mia & Sebastian shared some really nice chemistry and their singing wasn’t exceptional but it was decent. I am a jazz head, so the music was pleasing to me and John Legends rendition was splendid and the retro culture touch was the icing on the cake for old timers like me.

Other than the singing, I enjoyed the symmetry in the way the movie was shot. The scenes were shot in a way that balanced the actors and the LA backdrop and especially THAT sunrise scene made a dude feel all warm inside. The climax of the movie felt real, because we can all relate.

La La Land will tickle your musical bones and keep you swooning as you fall in love with the characters. You are not going to see a better musical in a while so it earns an 8.3/10 score on my awesome-o-metre.

We see a first lady who is trying to keep a strong public exterior while struggling with sorrow.

Nominated for 3 Oscars, Jackie is a very intimate and up and personal tale about a first lady who was renowned for her self-assured nature and class who was dying of sorrow and grief in her in her closet while keeping an appearance of strength.  Usually when the assassination story is told, it’s usually from the POV of the security agencies or witnesses but this perspective is one that has been largely unexploited but possesses so much material. There are scenes where JFK (Caspar Phillipson) does make an appearance but he is peripheral because this time, the story isn’t about him.

Natalie Portman deserves and Oscar (and a grammy sef) for her portrayal of Jackie. After a while, you stopped see her character and you actually Saw Jackie Kennedy, her intensity.  Her accent and carriage was spot on and the make-up/wardrobe was the icing on the cake.

This is Pablo’s first English feature film and I think he did a fantastic job. His recreation of the time and events was extraordinary. There were portions of the film that were juxtaposed with original footage and you could see and appreciate the detail in his recreation. However, there was something that kept playing on my mind when I was watching this film. We see Jackie as some sort of a show-(wo)man who was all about her public image, hence her insistence on wearing her blood stained dress and it explains why she paraded the kids who were mourning the loss of their father.  Is this who she really was or just a dispassionate portrayal of her real person? Whatever the case, the movie was really moving and the movie score was super and further heightened the feeling of sorrowfulness of the film.

Jackie is a great watch and a movie I will recommend this.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id="Videos"][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text="WATCH OFFICIAL TRAILER HERE" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_empty_space height="25px"][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_video link="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9pW3B8Ycc4" el_width="70"][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height="35px"][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The faced challenges because of the color of their skin and the fact that they were women in what was a predominantly male role.

This feel good drama may have happened many years ago but the trials these women faced still endures even today. It is tough being a woman even in today’s world but this heartwarming story helps us understand that with hard work, dedication and perseverance, things will work out.

I must commend the exceptional performances of Henson, Spencer, and Monáe's that added extra vigour to this already cheery movie and I am really pleased that it has been nominated for, and has won several awards. However, I noticed that the plot and even the release dates are a wink towards the Oscars. There is a question that always plays on my mind when I see such movies. Is a story about racism and oppression the only way a movie about colored people can get recognition?  Think about it…

It’s really great that the producers managed to weave in the backstories of the trio so we could understand that other than being brilliant mathematicians at work, they were still ordinary women at home with kids to cater to and challenging love lives. This makes us understand and appreciate the gravity of their achievement because they surmounted personal and social problems to excel at their endeavors.

Looking for a feel good movie that encourages audiences (especially women) to dream big? Then Hidden Figures is just the movie for you. Hidden Figures is a truly inspiring story with some fantastic acting and earns 8.6/10 score on my awesome-o-metre.

Enjoy!

Mark Whalberg is Mike Williams, an electronics technician that is trying to save himself and the survivors from the inferno and the ensuing melee.

I must say this was a great depiction of the one of the biggest man-made disasters. You could actually feel the peril that the crew was in. The CGI was so awesome that you could almost feel the heat through the screen. The sound effects to me were the highlight of the whole movie because you constantly keep hearing the creaking sounds that builds up tension and anticipation and keeps you wrapped up in the events unfolding before your eyes.

It’s funny how the characters used a lot of technical drilling terms which many of us did not understand but somehow were still able to follow what was going on. That’s quite an achievement because the movie ran the risk of losing the audience. Also, I noticed the producers didn’t want to harp on the negligence of BP but we still got the picture that the disaster was caused by greed and gross negligence.

Kurt Russel, Mark Whalberg and John Malkovich all gave awe-inspiring performances. It’s funny how I always expect John Malkovich to start acting crazy in every movie I see him, however there was no such joy in this movie because he was darn too serious. Mark was his usual hero self and Kurt Russel was the mother hen looking after her brood on the rig.

I am glad the movie did not dwell too much on the issue of who and what caused the explosion because honestly, we all know what happened. They rather stuck with the action and peril of the aftermath of the explosion.  The film is intelligent but action packed and earns a 6.7/10 rating on my awesome-o-metre because it was an entertaining watch.

Album : Accra to Lagos Vol 1

Artist : Mr Eazi

Release Date : February 10, 2017

Awesome-o-metre : 7/10[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_empty_space height="10px"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading source="post_title" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_empty_space height="25px"][vc_column_text css_animation="left-to-right"]Our favorite (err maybe not so favorite after his recent social media debacle on how Ghanaian sounds influence Naija music) Naija/Ghana boy Mr. Eazi recently dropped his critically acclaimed album mixtape. this thing genuinely causes confusion but then again I digress and we at Revue have decided to take a trip from Accra to Lagos and enjoy the Afro infused sounds.

The album starts with LEG OVER. There is no football reference here whatsoever! It’s a demonstration of how big bum-bum will continue to cause confusion in these zones. It is a very sweet and mellow sound and a perfect way to start the mixtape. Eazi’s voice resonates on the highlife influenced sound – a theme we will notice all through the tape. I really like this song and hope to see a video with girls with big bum-bum from Accra and Lagos causing confusion.

Track 2 is BUSINESS featuring Mugeez of R2Bees. This is another heavily “highlife infused” sound. Everyone knows R2Bees own that sound. Mugeez and Eazi’s voices resonate as they sing about people who choose not to just mind their business. Basically the homies feel it is nobody’s business how they be killing the beat. I was honestly waiting for Faisal to come drop some of his witty lines at the end of the song then I remembered it’s just Mugeez on this one. I really feel he would have made the song a lot better but overall it’s one of my favorites already and the tape has started on a very high note.

Eazi gets one of Ghana’s rising rappers Medikal on the Del B produced TILAPIA. The title of the song kind of confuses me but Eazi seems to be hungry and craving some Tilapia. Considering my generation where gay ain’t happy, a hoe is not a farming implement and people be singing about cassava, Tilapia could actually mean anything. The song was going smoothly until Medikal actually said “something dey smell fishy, aquarium” and I had to go…

Nothing major here but still a feel good song.

The Masterkraft produced 2 PEOPLE has that ragga feel that reminds me of a particular Kayswitch in his prime in the good old MoHits days.

When I heard IT’S YOUNG JOHN THE WICKED PRODUCER!!!!! ZAGADATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT I just knew some fire was about to happen. Best song on the mixtape by a mile! FEELINGS really got a grown man in his feelings, who does not want to show his feelings, and un-following his crush on all social media. It resonates with me – literally and figuratively. This will definitely get some heavy rotation with the perfect video.

Eazi puts my boo Cuppy on the intro of FIGHT, (Look boo, if he is fighting you, I’m here for you anytime. Just call me ok?) Nothing serious here. Just another feel-good track on the mixtape.

The title track for the tape, ACCRA TO LAGOS has Eazi vibing on some heavy afro beats tune where he talks about his travails and struggle to success, It’s a major, major tune and I can feel a lot of his label boss’ (Wizkid) influence on this track. It’s funny that both of them are yet to have a collaboration but we are definitely looking forward to that track will definitely be fire.

DETTY YOURSELF with a guest verse from FALZ THE BAD GUY is already sounding like a certified club banger. IN THE MORNING featuring Toronto rapper BIG LEAN starts off with some major trumpets that reverberates all through the track. The production by Legendary Beatz on this one was definitely top notch and I really liked Big Lean’s verse on the track.

SHORT SKIT featuring our favorite boy TEKNO is like the title short and sweet. I really love how Eazi can still make good music without having to sound pangolo and I think a lot of Naija artistes can learn from this.

When you have the 2 biggest indigenous rappers in Nigeria on one track, it needs no introduction. LIFE IS EAZI featuring OLAMIDE and PHYNO is straight up fire. On the side I really wish sometimes PHYNO’s rap can come with subtitles so I can understand all he says but regardless, this will be one of the hottest tunes this year - no doubt.

After 11 frenzy tracks, Eazi decides to bless us with 3 additional bonus tracks as if we need more sweet melodies. The first, BABY, is perhaps his attempt at a wedding tune. The song will definitely go down well with some Party Jollof, whether Naija or Ghanaian (that’s a topic for another discussion).

Eazi tells his girl he wants to be her RIGHT NOW over some mellow beat and he promises to do things to her on the low. It looks like this girl has a sugar boo that pay her bills while Eazi be giving her attention. Eazi wraps up the tape with KPAMUREGE.

WRAP UP - After warming our hearts and giving us major tunes back to back, Eazi drops a body of work that can rival any that has been dropped by a Naija/Ghanaian (we still don’t know where his allegiance lies) artist in a while. For a mixtape, we actually have a contender for album of the year in my opinion. I truly hope 2017 gives us a lot of other major releases though cos 2016 was quite underwhelming when it came to Naija albums. For an artist who entered the fray not so long ago, Eazi has definitely carved a niche with his unique sound and style and I believe he is someone that can stay a long time in the industry. His “cross culture” also helps influence his sounds largely and I think with a market in 2 major countries in Africa he will definitely be relevant for a long time.

Life is Eazi, Vol. 1 - Accra to Lagos earns a whopping 7/10 rating from me and I have thoroughly enjoyed my trip from Accra to Lagos. Dropping from my Danfo at a random bus stop in Obalande as I try to find my way back home. Show love and take Life Eazi people. *drops mic*
