Revue of FIRST MAN

First Man is the riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight. A visceral and intimate account told from Armstrong’s perspective, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the film explores the triumphs and the cost—on Armstrong, his family, his colleagues and the nation itself—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

When you see a film specifically made for the Oscars, you immediately recognize it. First Man was made for the Academies and let me tell you why I know this;

  1. First Man is boring! This film is a snooze fest to the average moviegoer because there isn’t any energy and the film seems to lack any real entertainment value. There weren’t any action sequences, fight scenes or even convoluted dialogue…the film appears boring AF.
  2. The detail to the Cinematography. The cinematography in First Man is amazing but the ordinary filmgoer does not care (or even know) what cinematography is. However, the technical film enthusiast will recognize that this is a great piece of work especially with the constant use of POV and tight camera shots to catch the emotions of the characters and giving the viewer a more intimate feel to the film.
  3. The music in First Man is eerie as it is magnificent. When I heard the Theremin and the loud Moog synthesizer, I thought this was Hans Zimmer’s handwork but I was surprised to find out it was Justin Hurwitz. The music passed to the audience this feeling of loneliness that Armstrong felt throughout the moon landing. The use of the Synthesizer and the Theremmin is very appropriate for the period so this is a plus for the film.
  4. Sound. Other than the music, the sound was amazing because similar to Deepwater Horizon you hear so many sounds like ratchets rattling, loose screws and loud explosions and even the constant breathing of the astronauts. These sounds going off all at once gave First Man one fantastic à la carte of sound.

All I have listed above are absolute crap to the average moviegoer so if you aren’t into technicalities in movies, you have no business seeing First Man. If on the other hand yo are into technical stuff, please see First Man…preferably in IMAX. I am touting First Man to be in contention for Sound, Cinematography and even best picture at the Oscars. Your Turn!

  • Nice write up. I watched the trailer and will agree that it’s going to be a boring movie to the regular action seeking movie goers.

    I will still find time to see the movie just to learn how to appreciate the technical details as described in your beautiful write up.

    Nice job team revue.
