Revue of THE EQUALIZER 2

The Equalizer 2 sees Denzel Washington in his first sequel reprising his role as Robert McCall a retired secret agent who is still meting out his brand of vigilante justice against oppressors of the weak. The bad guys missed road and harmed his only friend and they will feel his wrath.

Denzel’s opening line in The Equalizer gave me chills. He said “There are two types of pain in this world- pain that hurts and pain that alters, choose yours”. I think that is one of the coldest lines you will ever get to hear and Denzel in his usual calm manner delivered it with such venom that you begin to feel sorry for the subject of his fury. The Equalizer 2 is reminiscent of the first one with the title character (who funny enough was never referred to as The Equalizer) killing people with such cool and calm efficiency and focus with no gra gra and to this extent it was a super film.

However, in line films of its ilk such as Taken and John Wick, The Equalizer cannot escape comparison with the first installment if it was as good. To this extent, I will say The Equalizer was a worthy sequel but it honestly wasn’t as good as the first one. Like Taken, The Equalizer lacked any real element of surprise that made their first outings spectacular. We already know what the title character can do and we expected more but they were unable to deliver any more than we already know he is capable of. Including other characters to further illuminate his humane vigilante qualities didn’t really add to the film.

Furthermore, the plot of the film was ordinary and there were long stretches of the film where nothing seemed to be going on. I guess the idea was to a build up to a great finale but it became rather boring excusing one to a quick snooze. Talking about the grand finale, the conclusion wasn’t particularly exceptional because we already know how it was all going to unravel. However, I must note that the “Last Fight” with the villain against the backdrop of a roaring hurricane was amazing. The fight was a bit short but very satisfying. I think the CGI of the hurricane was spectacular and further illumined the plot of the film.

The Equalizer 2 just belatedly arrived to Nigerian cinemas today, but I guess it’s better late than never huh? So if you do go and see it, let me know in the comment below or on social media (Twitter and Facebook )

Have a blast!
