Revue of THE MEG

The Meg is set 200 miles off the Chinese coast where a deep sea submarine is attacked by a Megalodon shark, thought to be extinct. With the ship disabled at the bottom of the sea, a rescue diver and oceanographer called Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) must quickly work to rescue the crew and the team of the international undersea observation program.

The Meg isn’t the best shark attack film you have seen, but it wasn’t half bad. The plot was very rudimentary and filled with cliché scenes executed with some pretty bad acting. This lack of inventiveness in plot of The Meg will leave you with a niggling feeling of having seen this film before and that’s because the films direction is similar to so many shark films before. For instance, the attempt at tagging the Megalodon shark is something we see time and time again.

I was kinda surprised that Jason Statham is in this kind of a film because it seems out of character for him to shoot a film that doesn’t involve him kicking ass. I guess this is another direction with him kicking a sharks butt rather than humans. Nevertheless, he did a good job with his character though he seemed a bit wooden and this may not be unrelated to the fact that this is a novel terrain for him.

The Meg had a few things going for it with one of those being the CGI Megalodon. The shark attacks elicited a lot of screams and squirms from the audience and if (like me) you see The Meg with female company, be sure you will come away with a few finger nail marks on your forearm. Another highlight of the film is the series of twists close to the end and I guess the idea was to inject some kind of uncertainty into the well-worn plot.

The Meg (belatedly) came to Nigerian Cinemas on Friday the 24th of August and I recommended it if you want to put a bit of oomph to your weekend. So if you see The Meg, please feel free to leave a comment below or on Twitter and Facebook and let me know what you think of it.
