Revue of THE NUN
The Nun revolves around a young sister called Sis Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and a priest called Fr Burke (Demián Bichir) who are commissioned by the Vatican to investigate the suicide of a young Nun in a secluded abbey in Romania. Together, they uncover the order’s unholy secret and risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun called Valak.
The Nun is the 5th installment in the Conjuring Universe and is the first in the chronological order of all the films and revolves around Valak (the ominous Nun that we met in Conjuring 2). I was super excited about The Nun because I love all the Conjuring films (which is one of the best Horror franchise in recent times) but frankly, this film wasn’t as scary as I would have liked it to be. I expected to s**t my pants in fear at the thought of Valak having a film all to herself but she seemed to lack that killer punch. Admittedly the Nun is a scary demon but there were not enough scenes for her to “show herself”. Most of the film involved her manifesting in other ways or using her apprentices to do her dirty work and it left me that bit dissatisfied.
Don’t get me wrong and imagine that this film is child’s play because it’s not and it’s definitely not for the faint hearted. If your liver isn’t strong, don’t brave going to see it in the cinema but if you must go, please go with someone whose hand you can hold. My favorite scene in the movie was close to the end where Sis. Irene faced Valak face to face and recognized that s**t was about to hit the fan and she had to (wo)man up or die. My scariest scene will unquestionably be the buried alive scene because I am both claustrophobic and Taphophobic. Oh, my favorite line is the door with the inscription “God Ends Here”. That’s spooky AF!
The Nun isn’t the scariest in the Conjuring Universe but it’s a fair attempt as some of the terrifying scenes will give you chills and you would be excused a few shrieks and squirms. So, if you are a horror head like me, you won’t go wrong going to see The Nun which will give you a better understanding of the demon Nun that we have come to know (and Love?) in this franchise.
Have a great week guys!
