Revue of THE VENDOR aka Omo Ologo
The Vendor stars Odunlade Odukoya as a very amiable newspaper vendor who by a chance meeting becomes the driver to a well to do lady (Adunni Ade) and a friendship ensues between them with comical consequences.
I will be honest to say I have deliberately been avoiding watching The Vendor because from the trailer the film looked like one of those comedies that won’t appeal to me. However, I reluctantly watched it a few days ago, and it was just what I expected.
The Vendor’s plot pivoted on a rambunctious fellow and the laughs were basically from the main character’s misadventures. However, the Vendor had no real direction and just kept stretching with Odunlade giving us his comical facial expressions that has made him the king of meme in Nigeria. There were also so many scenes and characters that had no real value but to add to the juvenile essence of the film. Furthermore, the film seemed to be unscripted and relied on the cast bringing in their natural humour to comical effect. This style may have worked for Odunlade who is a natural funnyman but Adunni seemed out of her depth. I assumed this style of film making had ended with Nkem Owoh’s older films, but I guess I was wrong.
That said, I have discovered that I may be in the minority because some other people in the cinema seemed to be having the time of their life, laughing at the antics of The Vendor while I looked on unamused. I recall when I reviewed Alakada Reloaded and expressed my “unenjoyment” of the film and got a lot of stick from Nigerians who thought I was snooty because the film was the bomb.
I am of the opinion that The Vendor isn’t funny or entertaining, but I am in the minority so if you are into comedies like Papa Ajasco (LOL) and Alakada Reloaded, then this is just the film for you but if that’s not your thing, it’s best to stay away from The Vendor.
