Revue of RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER
This installment of the game to movie franchise, sees Milla Jovovich reprise her role as Alice, who goes back to The Hive where e4verything started to put an end to it all.
I am glad they called this movie The Final Chapter because the end couldn’t have come sooner. The franchise ran its course a long time ago but the producers would not just let it die in peace. How do you explain a movie that had to start with a retelling of the story because they know we can’t even remember all the other installments? It felt like I was watching a Telemundo telenovela that starts with a deep voice saying “Previously on Resident Evil”
What’s worse, in their recap, they completely changed the storyline to the extent that I was unsure if I had watched any of the previous movies. They altered the story on who created the T Virus and who the Red Queen was. I found this rather tacky because it was pretty obvious that this movie could go no further without some tweaks here and there. I refuse to say anything about the ridiculous attempt at a plot twist at the end of the movie.
For a movie that was touted as an action horror, it was ironic most of the guys in the cinema were in stitches laughing at the folly of the movie. Why did they have to re-introduce that corridor with the laser beams that cut people in half? Apparently, it’s the highlight of the franchise but what they failed to recognize is that while it was cool the first time, it’s just plain sad now.
The so called action scenes were just a bunch of jump cut scenes with flashes of light and excessive use of the shaky cam technique which we all know is a method to hide lazy and subpar fight scenes to give it a semblance of speed. If you were unlucky to have seen this movie in 3D, I am sure you will testify to enduring the headache of the century.
But now that Resident Evil is over, what will Milla Jovovich do? This has basically been the core of her acting career. Anyways, I guess this is an opportunity for her to look for something else and start afresh. Talking about starting afresh, I suspect the producers want to close this chapter of the franchise and reboot the story probably with different cast and direction.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was oh so predictable and filled up with cheesy one liners and fight scenes and we are all glad that it has come to an end. It earns a measly 5.0/10 on my awesome-o-metre.
