Revue of WIVES ON STRIKE: THE REVOLUTION

Wives on Strike: The Revolution is the sequel to Wives on Strike (2016) and it follows these market women fighting against domestic violence after one of them was beaten to death by her husband. This leads to yet another strike by the women against their husbands forcing their hands to stand up for what is right.

The movie, written, produced and directed by Omoni Oboli, is a didactic movie strewn with comedy and the cliché of using popular Nigerian expressions. I would not lie, I had my reservations when I went in to see the movie but I enjoyed it. Let’s just say, Omoni Oboli is gearing up to be an A-List Director.

I could relate with this movie on many levels: largely because I am a woman and it did not have that Nollywood “bourgeoisie” lifestyle where everyone is over-rich and all is well with Nigeria. They spoke pidgin 90% of the movie. Another thing was that the movie was not a romance movie. Thank you (exhales)! Nollywood movies only seem to have romance as their central focal point, subject and overall theme. I also liked that the movie did not digress too much from its plot and ensured that its message was resounded without over-flogging it. In case you don’t know, now you know that the Lagos State Government has a Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team with qualified counsellors.

On the flip side, I don’t know why it felt like the movie was long. From the middle, it almost felt like every scene was the end. I think this may be because the movie was not suspense-filled at all! Also, I did not enjoy that the movie was loud; the characters were just loud. I guess that stems from the fact that they were market women though. Another thing that did not sit well with me was the advertisement strategy and product placement in the movie; it was too glaring and not properly sewn into the script. There is room for improvement though

Despite my reservations I enjoyed the movie. Make sure you look out for the soundtrack by Miss Kedike (Chidinma)
