[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Revue of CRAZY RICH ASIANS” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”left-to-right”]Crazy Rich Asians is an adaptation of the book with similar title and is about this guy called Nick Young (Henry Golding) who is from a very rich home and falls in love with a New Yorker- Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) but fails to tell her that he is a big boy back in Singapore. However, when Rachel accompanies Nick to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore Rachel is unprepared for the jealousy from the socialites and the disapproval of Nick’s conservative mother (Michelle Yeoh).

This is one of the most basic storylines so why exactly is it one of the top movies in Hollywood now? The simple reason is the execution of the movie. The plot is like something out of Nollywood but what keeps Crazy Rich Asians apart is how this simple plot was executed with finesse and grandiose. Crazy Rich Asians exemplifies that in this world, there are rich people and there are Crazy Rich people! The show of affluence in this film will leave you reeling with jealousy especially the wedding scene that had the ladies swooning and all teary eyed.

However, one thing I didn’t like was the way Nick’s mother was painted as a villain. Many people fail to understand the spirit of culture and conservation and the need to protect it at all cost because everyone wants to be liberal and open-minded. To me, Nick’s mother’s disapproval of the relationship between her son and an “Americanized” woman can be validated because she sought to protect her son from excessive westernization and by extension shield her culture from going extinct. But hey, I guess that’s the way of the world these days.

The only shortcoming to Crazy Rich Asians was that it kinda slowed down midway into the film and started to lose the audience but the frenzy returned just in time to save it from derailment. The film was well shot in scenic locations and has great character development with sufficient laughs to keep you hooked. I predict it will be one of the most successful films this summer especially because it appeals to the female audience.

Crazy Rich Asians is the real definition of “If you no get money, hide your face” and comes highly recommended for a day out at the cinema. I must warn anybody planning a wedding not to go to see this film or risk feeling inadequate. Don’t say I didn’t warn you o.

Crazy Rich Asians comes to Nigerian cinemas this weekend, so when you see it please leave a comment in the comment section below or holla at me on Twitter or Facebook

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”REVUE OF OCEAN’S 8″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”left-to-right”]Oceans 8 stars Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean who for Five years, eight months, 12 days has been contriving the biggest heist of her life to steal a necklace fabled to be worth more than $150 million. To pull off this ambitious heist, she recruits a crew of specialists, including hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna), street con Constance (Awkwafina) and Lou (Cate Blanchett). Ocean’s 8 is an all-female cast Spin-off of George Clooney’s Ocean’s Eleven universe. However, the premise of this installment is that Clooney’s Character’s sister is the con (wo)man pulling off the ultimate heist.

I wasn’t expecting a novel plot because this film is an offshoot of another film but what I was anxious to see is HOW the plot will be executed. To that extent, Ocean’s 8 is quite entertaining. Sandra Bullock was suave and oozed of charisma to engage and carry the audience along. The other characters also put in a good shift as Rihanna gave a decent performance as a talented hacker and Anne Hathaway is convincing as a naïve celeb. Another plus for Ocean’s 8 is the humor of the characters without which this film would have come up as unexciting.

Though, it is a good thing that the producers deployed similar cinematography as the films predecessors, but honestly gave the film a feel of unoriginality. I understand that Ocean’s 8 is a sequel to Ocean’s Eleven but it just felt that the primary drive of the film was to appeal to female audience what with the best of fashion and designers strewn all over the film. This kind of alienated the guys from film but the women in the room were having a ball (pun intended).

Generally, Ocean’s 8 was entertaining because the ensemble had chemistry which gave the film a fun feel and the heist was well executed even though the attempt at a plot twist wasn’t as convincing since we all saw it coming from a mile off.

Ocean’s 8 is a good film for a girls’ night out or for date night so I can recommend it for the ladies and the guys will get a kick out of their women having the time of their life. Anyways, please feel free to drop a line in the comment section below or on my Twitter or Facebook page and let me know what you think about Ocean’s 8.

PS. The premier of this film at Filmhouse Cinema’s Lekki had a Met Gala theme so it was fun to see the outfits. However, when I got the call to attend the event, I thought the caller said the theme was a METH Gala, so let’s say I was inappropriately dressed. LOL.

Elisa (mute) and Zelda (talkative) work as cleaners in a top-secret government laboratory post-cold-war. It seemed like a routine job until someone dies during their shift and they were asked to mop up the place. Elisa discovered a Fish-Man held by the facility and gets help from her best friend and Zelda to recuse ‘it’ (soon to be him) and things take an unusual turn from there.

Guys, Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor have just made me watch the most disturbing movie of the year so far. This movie was just plain weird. Don’t get me wrong, Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, the director, and the cinematography was all on point…but come on! Even Beauty and the beast didn’t go all R18 on us.

I doubt anything can top this disturbing but enjoyable film. The Golden Globes nominated ‘Shape of Water,’ because it is about love and acceptance *straight face* and truly, there isn’t a better time for such a film, what with the Sex Doll craze that has been blowing across the globe. Its already been nominated for 13 Academy awards and I am sure it will win a lot because we all know that Hollywood like creepy love stories.

Moving on, the Fish-Man turned out to possess supernatural powers; he was a god. The Canadian movie continued with the couple running evading the authorities to live happily ever after (lol). My favorite quote in the movie: A man washes his hands before or after attending to his needs (pee), never both. #iagree.

If you aren’t creeped about interspecies relationships, then go see The Shape Of Water but if you are easily grossed out, just jejely move on along. Somehow this film (obviously) didn’t make it to Nigerian cinemas, so look for alternate ways to watch it and don’t forget to hit me up on Twitter and Facebook  or in the comment section below to tell me what you think.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Revue of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text css_animation=”left-to-right”]The Greatest Showman is a bold and original musical that celebrates the birth of show business and the sense of wonder we feel when dreams come to life. Inspired by the ambition and imagination of P.T. Barnum, “The Greatest Showman” tells the story of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a mesmerizing spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. “The Greatest Showman” is directed by exciting new filmmaker, Michael Gracey, with songs by Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Here’s my two cents on the movie that’s got everybody who has seen it, talking. The movie highlighted the ‘from nothing to something’ life and career of circus pioneer, Phineas Taylor Barnum. The plot is a basic one with no depth and was predictable – son of a tailor who rose to become a show business icon (climax of the movie) and then lost it all in one swoop but recovered with the help of friends and family. *Yawns* c’mon Hollywood!

But then, despite the not so novel plot this film was so attractive and enjoyable!  The songs put together by the songwriting team of Justin Paul and Benj Pasek and their ten songs tracklist (currently Billboard No. 1)  might have cluttered the screen but it was the most enjoyable thing about this movie. I am also positive that the audience appreciated that the songwriting duo took into consideration the fact that not everybody is a fan of classical music as almost all the songs were classical verses paired with more contemporary choruses.

The cast in my opinion, was perfect. Hugh Jackman could do no wrong as Barnum and the choice of Zac Efron as Philip was a good one considering his performance in high school musical. Zendaya came through in her duet with Zac for the song ‘rewrite the stars’ and the role of the Swedish songbird Jenny Lind was played by Rebecca Ferguson although her powerful vocals for the song ‘never enough’ was belted by The Voice US runner up – Loren Allred.

Everything said, this is a feel-good movie and I will rate it 7/10.  5 for the songs, 1 for the cast and 1 for everything else.

I will recommend that you go see The Greatest Showman and I dare go out on a limb to say we have an Oscar winner here. Get your cheap cinema tickets HERE.  I am curious to hear what you have to say so feel free to hit me up on Twitter and Facebook

However, when Seal starts to smuggle drugs for a notorious cartel, things get rather complicated.

If this film is indeed a true story, it is one hell of a story! The plot was full of intricacies, conspiracies and the likes. I principally liked the way the plot was offered – it was shot almost as a comedy but even with the comedic perspective, you could perceive the peril that the characters were enduring. Furthermore, the prologue of the film was shot somewhat like a POV documentary with the main character giving commentaries as to the goings on in the film, because honestly if not for the narration, I would have gotten lost 10 minutes into the film. So, make sure you pay attention.

One drawback of the film was that it was super long and exhausting.  To aid digestion however the producers intermittently threw in some action which kind of sustained the film to its conclusion. I was glad to see Tom Cruise as a pilot again similar to his role as Maverick in Top Gun, I guess it’s a prelude to a Top Gun remake which I hear is in the offing.

If you are a fan of crime films, American Made is definitely down your alley and if like me you don’t trust secret agencies because of their shady deals which they consummate in the name of national security then this is the film to feed your paranoia. LOL

When the scholarship they were counting on doesn’t come through, they decide to open an illegal casino in their neighbour’s house and things kinda spiral out of control.

This movie was released since June 2017 but has only just come to Nigerian cinemas which is quite a shame because it is a real nice film. Maybe I am just biased because Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler are among my favourite SNL alumni. They are both bat crazy and they brought this into this film; I particularly liked how Will’s character went from being average an parent genuinely worried that he may not be able to afford his daughters tuition into a crazy gangster enforcer nicknamed “The Butcher”.

I will admit that this film’s plot is not novel and bears similarities with Seth Rogen’s Neighbour (which was also co-written by this film’s director) and like Neighbours, there were stretches of the film which were drawn with nothing funny going on. I think the funniest part of the film was when Will’s character chopped off the finger of a patron who was suspected of card counting. Another curious thing was Jeremy Renner’s role as the mob boss of the dude who lost his finger because I honestly expected more from him but his role was quite short although I must admit it was funny the way he was dealt with.

Anyways, if you are looking for a good time, this is the film to see because it is quite funny  so buy your ticket HERE to go see it in any cinema in Nigeria. Afterwards, feel free to hit me up on Twitter and Facebook.  And let me know what you think.

Girls Trip is definitely an easy-to-like movie with lots of laughs, a bit of drama and if you are an emotional munchkin like me, some water works. However, the movie is best not seen with children within earshot. The rated ‘R’ is no jokes.

Fans of Think Like a Man and The Best Man franchises and Black culture movies would thoroughly enjoy this one. A good number of us that are familiar with Black culture movies know that African-Americans are particular about their faith (in God), family, friendships, loyalties and soul food. Well, Girls Trip is not far-fetched from the above-listed.

I particularly took time to reflect on my own “posse” consisting of myself and three girlfriends who have been friends all the way from 100 level while seeing the movie. A line that stood out for me was Regina Hall’s character, Ryan, explaining that the fear of being alone makes people remain in bad relationships but being alone is not bad; it only makes you re-discover yourself (paraphrased).

The disappointing thing for me, however, was that the movie was predictable. It had followed that usual pattern – a big fight towards the end, “kiss and make-up” and certain decisions being made. I had expected those and I was not disproved. A bit of unpredictability would have been welcomed.

Notwithstanding, as a chic flick, this is one movie you should enjoy with your girlfriends and probably plan your own girls’ trip to rekindle, re-bond and re-ignite that wild side. The guys are not left out. I am quite confident that my men would enjoy this, *wink *wink.

When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music (pun intended) when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

There is a reason why Edgar Wright is one of my favourite directors; I like his directing and editing style which gives a certain feel to even the most mundane of activities such as  ringing a door bell. Baby Driver is flavoured with his signature editing style and directing where the actors’ actions are in sync with the music playing. It’s not out of place to compare this film with Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 1 because of the collection of music that Baby listens to. If you are a sucker for old school music, this film is definitely right up your alley.

The plot of the film isn’t a novel one. As a matter of fact when I saw the synopsis I was reluctant to go see the film and it’s just because it was directed by Edgar Wright that I went to see it with some level of anticipation. Trust Edgar Wright to take an ordinary plot and exaggerate it beyond your expectations. The car chase sequences were brilliant and intense and the actors especially Ansel Elgort did a fantastic job bringing wit and a tinge of humor to the film.

Baby Driver further entrenches my belief that there is always a song for every occasion so when you put those ear buds on, the music drives you and makes you feel invincible.

This is definitely one of the most fun movies I have seen this year with a perfect blend of music, action and wit. Edgar Wright has not disappointed me and I am thinking of going back for a second helping of the film. Why don’t you also go see it by clicking HERE to get your discounted movie ticket. Dunkirk, tells this story from 3 perspectives; The Mole (the land) the sea, and the air which are all taking place at different times but entwined into one non-linear chronicle of the events of the Dunkirk evacuation.

From the précis above, you can imagine how hard it will be to pull off such a movie but Christopher Nolan in his first non-fantasy film has managed to create a masterpiece because it is not every day you see a movie where the intense action was transmitted largely from acting and with little or no dialogue. I don’t recall hearing any dialogue in the first 15 minutes of the film but you could still feel the peril and danger which pervaded the atmosphere. This sense of peril was further heightened by the masterful violin instrumentation orchestrated by Hans Zimmer, reminisce of his organ rendition in Interstellar. Just like Interstellar, the music becomes almost unbearably loud and suddenly goes quiet and this sudden drop is usually the quiet before the storm hits.

Though this film is a war film it really is more a film about survival set in a war front. (I hope that makes sense). Dunkirk weaves a story of the land, air and sea troops who were just trying to survive and go home. But my favourite thread of this three-pronged perspective approach is that which chronicled the RAF Airman (Tom Hardy) who was singlehandedly fighting an armada of spitfires with a plane which was basically a kite. This film was a story of bravery and survival in the midst of immense adversity.

Despite all I have just said, I have not seen that much hissing and walkouts in a cinema. People were impatient and were streaming out in droves. A cinema goer who overheard me say Dunkirk was great accosted me and accused me of pretending to be “woke”. He said I was trying to pass of as a bourgeois viewer because according to him the film was a pure “waste of time” as Dunkirk was hollow. Though this may be accurate for an average movie goer because the intent of the film is not immediately apparent and may require some contemplation to unearth, I plead that you give it time and believe you me, when you get the direction, you will really appreciate this film. I know this may be a little early, but I see an Oscar nomination for Dunkirk.

I am actually curious to hear what you guys think, so please feel free to leave a comment in the comment section below, or on my social media. You do know you can get a movie ticket  to see Dunkirk by just clicking here ba?

Trivia. Did you know that Michael Caine has featured in every Chris Nolan film since Batman Begins? In Dunkirk, listen for his distinctive voice giving orders to the pilots.

Enjoy your week!

Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) who on a routine patrol of the beach finds a pack of drugs washed up on the shore and he suspects that Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra) may be using her business as a front for dealing drugs. To bust this ring, Mitch enlists the help of his team especially Matt (Efron) a headstrong Olympic medalist doing community service.

Yet again, Hollywood has gone to dig up an old favorite of the 90s and made it into a movie expecting to tap into the audience’s nostalgia to make money. However, just like Power Rangers this one too was not all it was touted to be.  The plot of the movie was basic and quite shallow and we had to lean on the R rated humor for any sort of entertainment.

Even though this movie attempted to spoof the series which ran in the early 90s and starred David Hasselhoff, they did try to mute the premise of that series which was women running on the beach in swim suits. I am not so sure that this was a good thing because let’s be honest, the reason we watched Baywatch was to see Pam Anderson and Carmen Electra run in slow mo with boobs swaying. However, these days we have other ways to take care of such cravings and our titillation desires have gotten more advanced . so this movie was wrongly timed because its premise no longer resonates with us. To be fair to them, athletic bodies alone with a little action thrown in was always going to be quite a hard sell. Standards are quite higher now.

The highlight of the movie for me was the cameo appearance of the cast of the old series, other than that…nothing.

Let me not sha spoil it for you get your ticket here and go see it for yourself.
