In this new take on the tragic love story, Bradley Cooper is a seasoned musician (Jackson Maine) who discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Lady Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer… until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.

It’s amazing how talented Bradley Cooper is! I was blown away by his directorial debut and even his singing abilities. It’s no mean feat that he has been Oscar nominated four times but I think this is the film that will finally clinch the Academy award for him. Let me breakdown the highlights of A Star Is born:

The Music: Lady Gaga gave one of her most powerful music performance and Bradly matched her tone for tone. My favorite song off the album must be The Shallows which was such a ridiculously emotional song. Even I’ll never love again almost made hard man like me start crying in the cinema but I stayed strong…

The Acting: Gaga and Bradley were so perfect together that you get so immersed in their performance that they no longer seem like actors but real characters. Yes, the chemistry was that good.

Directing: It’s hard to believe that this is Bradley Coopers directorial debut because this movie was so perfectly executed. He chose eerie silence rather than score the whole film and this silence kept the audience on edge like an ominous cloud of darkness that was about to befall the ill-fated lovers. I also liked the simplicity in the shots and direction which weren’t convoluted but just so easy to follow.

A Star Is Born is a tear jerker where Gaga gives a performance of a lifetime and Bradley Cooper shines in front and behind the camera. This is definitely an Academy (Oscar) contender and I cannot recommend this film enough- but I must warn that if you aren’t into slow-burners, then this may not be the film for you. If you do get to see A Star Is Born, please let me know what you think in the comment section below or on Twitter and Facebook.

However, when Rachel accompanies Nick to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore Rachel is unprepared for the jealousy from the socialites and the disapproval of Nick’s conservative mother (Michelle Yeoh).

This is one of the most basic storylines so why exactly is it one of the top movies in Hollywood now? The simple reason is the execution of the movie. The plot is like something out of Nollywood but what keeps Crazy Rich Asians apart is how this simple plot was executed with finesse and grandiose. Crazy Rich Asians exemplifies that in this world, there are rich people and there are Crazy Rich people! The show of affluence in this film will leave you reeling with jealousy especially the wedding scene that had the ladies swooning and all teary eyed.

However, one thing I didn’t like was the way Nick’s mother was painted as a villain. Many people fail to understand the spirit of culture and conservation and the need to protect it at all cost because everyone wants to be liberal and open-minded. To me, Nick’s mother’s disapproval of the relationship between her son and an “Americanized” woman can be validated because she sought to protect her son from excessive westernization and by extension shield her culture from going extinct. But hey, I guess that’s the way of the world these days.

The only shortcoming to Crazy Rich Asians was that it kinda slowed down midway into the film and started to lose the audience but the frenzy returned just in time to save it from derailment. The film was well shot in scenic locations and has great character development with sufficient laughs to keep you hooked. I predict it will be one of the most successful films this summer especially because it appeals to the female audience.

Crazy Rich Asians is the real definition of “If you no get money, hide your face” and comes highly recommended for a day out at the cinema. I must warn anybody planning a wedding not to go to see this film or risk feeling inadequate. Don’t say I didn’t warn you o.

Crazy Rich Asians comes to Nigerian cinemas this weekend, so when you see it please leave a comment in the comment section below or holla at me on Twitter or Facebook

Elisa (mute) and Zelda (talkative) work as cleaners in a top-secret government laboratory post-cold-war. It seemed like a routine job until someone dies during their shift and they were asked to mop up the place. Elisa discovered a Fish-Man held by the facility and gets help from her best friend and Zelda to recuse ‘it’ (soon to be him) and things take an unusual turn from there.

Guys, Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor have just made me watch the most disturbing movie of the year so far. This movie was just plain weird. Don’t get me wrong, Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, the director, and the cinematography was all on point…but come on! Even Beauty and the beast didn’t go all R18 on us.

I doubt anything can top this disturbing but enjoyable film. The Golden Globes nominated ‘Shape of Water,’ because it is about love and acceptance *straight face* and truly, there isn’t a better time for such a film, what with the Sex Doll craze that has been blowing across the globe. Its already been nominated for 13 Academy awards and I am sure it will win a lot because we all know that Hollywood like creepy love stories.

Moving on, the Fish-Man turned out to possess supernatural powers; he was a god. The Canadian movie continued with the couple running evading the authorities to live happily ever after (lol). My favorite quote in the movie: A man washes his hands before or after attending to his needs (pee), never both. #iagree.

If you aren’t creeped about interspecies relationships, then go see The Shape Of Water but if you are easily grossed out, just jejely move on along. Somehow this film (obviously) didn’t make it to Nigerian cinemas, so look for alternate ways to watch it and don’t forget to hit me up on Twitter and Facebook  or in the comment section below to tell me what you think.

However, while on tour to promote his book, a therapist called Kristin Peralta (Nadine Velazquez) questions his methods and their love-hate relationship blossoms into romance which forces him to rethink his past relationships.

I don’t mean to be a male chauvinist but it is obvious from the plot of this movie that this is totally a chick flick made more obvious when I noticed that at the cinema, there were more women than guys. Also, the guys there with me obviously came under coercion from their female partners.

The plot isn’t one we haven’t seen before as with all romcoms, we see two incompatible people battling with their feelings for each other and inevitably ending up together. What makes such movies interesting is the process of ending up together despite all odds. The Bounce Back was no different because the outcome was predictable but the progression is what was most appealing.

Honestly, there really wasn’t anything particularly memorable about the movie, but there were a lot of oohs and aaahs from the female folk especially when Shemar Moore is shirtless. But his chemistry with Nadine Velazquez made will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Also, I think the soundtrack of the movie wasn’t half bad and I may just go get it so I can feel it properly.

This is another movie that was released ages ago but for some strange reason, has only just started showing in Nigerian cinemas so feel free to follow this link and get a ticket to go see this movie with your boo. She will thank you.

Have an awesome day!

I haven’t always liked the ideology behind the Beauty and the Beast story. I always see it as how fickle a woman can be. “No matter how a man looks, as long as he is rich and can give a woman what she wants, she’ll fall for him”. Afterall Belle loved books and the Beast did give her books…lots of books!.

I don’t want to go into the story of the movie as we all know it, a spell was cast on a prince who was without love turning him into a gruesome beast…the sorceress then gave him a red rose and told him that by the time the last petal falls, if he has not found someone to love and who will love him in return, he will remain a beast forever.

The movie itself was lovely, I use the word ‘lovely’ very carefully because that is what it was; not amazing or scintillating just ‘Lovely’. I had a smile on my face throughout except when I was laughing really hard. There was a lot of humour in the movie. The Candle, the clock, Mrs Pots, Gaston and Lafou (I love Josh Gad!!).

The acting was okay, the effects were okay. I expected much more though, it seemed the movie was kind of forced; as though they tried too hard. Emma as Belle didn’t really impress me at all….she wasn’t as princessy, because I recall Belle to be a very dreamy young woman who lived in her books. I wished they had used a fresh young face….someone new to portray Belle.

The Beast came off as almost handsome in some scenes (probably trying to make him more lovable). Oh! and the singing wasn’t half bad.

Altogether I give the movie 6/10…It was good but not good enough but I am sure Disney is going to make a truck load of money. We should all see it (it’s Beauty and the Beast afterall). You can get your tickets by clicking here and saving yourself the hassle of joining a queue.

Ned frowns on Laird’s blithe attitude and panics when he learns of his intention to pop the question.

The fears of every father regarding his daughter are encapsulated in this movie. “Which kain guy my daughter go carry come house?” You see, fathers and daughters share a special bond and daddy must approve of the guy with whom she intends to settle down. When however, the guy is laid-back, foul mouthed and heavily tattooed, you best be sure that daddy is going to put up some stiff resistance.

The conflict of the movie borders on change and how people react to it. Ned is stuck in his old ways and is unwilling to adapt. However, it is easy to understand that people are comfortable with the status quo and fear any sort of change. As life is by its nature full of change however, you either adapt or go extinct. This kinda raises the question if new is always better?

I am of the old school and I am usually knocked for six when I see heavily tattooed guys carrying dreadlocks and throwing profanity all around. It’s really hard for me to understand these millennials with their lingo and carefree behavior, so I am sure that I would react just as Ned did. To that extent, the movie was relatable to me.

The movie does have some funny scenes and some rather not so funny scenes. The cast did a great job – my favorite being Bryan Cranston who never fails to impress me. James Franco was his usual cheeky self. There were also appearances by Cedric the Entertainer, Keegan-Michael Key and even a cameo from Tech Guru Elon Musk. Even Kaley Cuoco (of The Big Bang theory) makes an appearance (sort of).

Why Him?has some funny moments but is rather slow paced and not very compelling and earns 5.9/10 rating on my awesome-o-metre.
