However, upon Abel’s arrival, strange occurrences begin to manifest in the household.

I will admit that the name of the movie put me off seeing it for this long because that name sounds pretty basic. But this movie was anything but basic because it was a fantastic edge of your seat thriller. The screenplay was outstanding and I have to give particular mention to the camera works and the lighting. When I was watching this movie, I see that the director has picked up a manual on “How To Make A Good Movie” and was ticking the boxes- Suspense (check) Drama (check) Humor (check) Subtle hints (check). I think he did a fantastic job.

The acting was spot on too. I must say, I was impressed with Ireti’s Hausa, it was unexpected but very welcome and I have to applaud her versatility. All the other actors also did a fantastic job with some of them having to scrape some passable Hausa and even learning basic sign language. I was uncomfortable with the fact that Beverly Naya, Gabriel Afolayan and Ivie Okujaye were pretending to be younger than they really are but I will just let that one slide.

That being said, the movie was rather predictable and I could see the conclusion from a mile away. Honestly, there were scenes that attempted to build the story but turned out to be irrelevant and unnecessary. I feel the movie could have come out better as a short movie where you just hang your audience in suspense and finish them off with an abrupt and wicked plot twist.

One thing I have to say is that though Something Wicked was predictable, it was very entertaining.

]Director : Christian Olayinka

Cast : Rita Dominic, Femi Jacobs, Somkele Idahlamah, Chika Chukwu.

Genre : Thriller

Release Date : February 3, 2017

]Femi Jacobs and Somkele Idahlahmah are a happy couple who take in their friend Nikki (Rita Dominic) from school into their home after she is deported from the UK. Nikki is jealous of the couple and wants to take over as the madam of the house, and bodies start to pop up everywhere.

There are movies that define an actor and to me this is Rita Dominic’s defining role. I know she has done great movies like ’76 but her role as the psychotic murdering friend was just superb.  It was almost like she was more than one person at a time- at one moment she is the loving caring babe and as if someone flipped a switch, she becomes a murderous vengeful bitch. In Nigeria, we have a word for those kind of people…OGBANJE!!!!

Many people in the cinema were just judging Femi Jacobs because he “strayed” and fell for the charm of Rita’s character, which ignited the whole saga but did you see the eyes, ass and legs on that woman? Haba! It’s tew much for one man to resist jor.

The sound engineering on the movie sounded one kain though because in the producers’ quest to ensure we follow the dialogue, the voice of the actors sometimes sounded like it was coming from somewhere else and the ambient sound (when there was any) seemed out of sync.

The above notwithstanding, the movie was very a great thriller and would keep you at the edge of your seat. Though the conclusion would not come as a shocker probably due to it’s inevitability but it’s still enjoyable.

Rita Dominic was the irresistible seductress and her performance was as enthralling, so The Guest earns 7/10 on my awesome-o-metre.
