Conversely, The Irishman is the biggest loser on the night after winning no awards despite being nominated in 9 categories. I feel Stephen Spielberg and his ilk who aren’t fans of movies released on streaming services rather than cinemas may have a hand in this.
This may be the bad belle in me speaking but I am so glad that Lion King didn’t win for best Visual effects. I expected Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame to nick it but it surprisingly went to 1917 and this may be due to the “one take” style that the film was shot in.
I am elated that Joker won best actor because Phoenix’s acting was absolutely phenomenal and losing it would have been daylight robbery because NO ONE merits it more than he has. I believe this is his first win despite being nominated twice before.
