The Disney produced Queen Of Katwe is the true story of Phiona (Madina Nalwanga) living in the abject poverty in the Katwe slum of Uganda with her mother Harriet (Lupita Nyongo’o) and her siblings. Despite facing challenges, she rises to become a chess champion under the tutelage of Robert Katende (David Oyelowo).
Should I tell you what stood out for me in the whole movie? The acting. The kids were absolutely believable and realistic with their infusion of humor and they made sure the African flavor of the move was glaring. I supremely liked the finger clicking gesture they always did, that is soooo our thing in Africa. Africans are very dramatic in nature and this wasn't lost in the movie. Lupita and David Oyelowo may be Hollywood stars but goddamn their acting was so local- they nailed their accents and their delivery was brilliant.
My Nigerian pride was triggered when I heard P-Square, Davido and even MC Galaxy’s songs in the movie. Not sure why naija popular songs were used instead of Ugandan jams but anyways, I don’t care, all of us are one in Africa.
The movie has a PG rating but some intimate scenes with some light kissing could have been done away with because I could sense the unease of some of the kids at the cinema. It wasn't necessary.
I really liked the way the movie ended with the movie characters posing side by side with the characters they played. I really wished the Nollywood produced “93 Days” ended in this way because somehow, such scenes connects the movies with audiences.
QUEEN OF KATWE is a beautiful diamond in the rough, grass to grace story that will leave you all warm inside. It racks 7.0/10 rating on my awesome-o-metre.
