Set in the late 70s to the early 80s, American Made is based on real events revolving around Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) a TWA Arline pilot who is recruited by the CIA to undertake reconnaissance missions and later as a gun runner to the Americas. However, when Seal starts to smuggle drugs for a notorious cartel, things get rather complicated.

If this film is indeed a true story, it is one hell of a story! The plot was full of intricacies, conspiracies and the likes. I principally liked the way the plot was offered – it was shot almost as a comedy but even with the comedic perspective, you could perceive the peril that the characters were enduring. Furthermore, the prologue of the film was shot somewhat like a POV documentary with the main character giving commentaries as to the goings on in the film, because honestly if not for the narration, I would have gotten lost 10 minutes into the film. So, make sure you pay attention.

One drawback of the film was that it was super long and exhausting.  To aid digestion however the producers intermittently threw in some action which kind of sustained the film to its conclusion. I was glad to see Tom Cruise as a pilot again similar to his role as Maverick in Top Gun, I guess it’s a prelude to a Top Gun remake which I hear is in the offing.

If you are a fan of crime films, American Made is definitely down your alley and if like me you don’t trust secret agencies because of their shady deals which they consummate in the name of national security then this is the film to feed your paranoia. LOL

Undeniably, I enjoyed American Made and fans of Narcos will too, so why not click HERE for discounted tickets and feel free to leave your comment in the comment section or on my Twitter or Facebook page and let me know what you think about it.

Eid Mubarak everyone.
