Revue of Girls Trip by Oluwatofunmi

When four lifelong friends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Music Festival, sisterhood is rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, with nights of partying, more-than-enough drinking, hook-ups and bad decisions, as well as raw and vulnerable moments that strengthen their bond.

Girls Trip is definitely an easy-to-like movie with lots of laughs, a bit of drama and if you are an emotional munchkin like me, some water works. However, the movie is best not seen with children within earshot. The rated ‘R’ is no jokes.

Fans of Think Like a Man and The Best Man franchises and Black culture movies would thoroughly enjoy this one. A good number of us that are familiar with Black culture movies know that African-Americans are particular about their faith (in God), family, friendships, loyalties and soul food. Well, Girls Trip is not far-fetched from the above-listed.

I particularly took time to reflect on my own “posse” consisting of myself and three girlfriends who have been friends all the way from 100 level while seeing the movie. A line that stood out for me was Regina Hall’s character, Ryan, explaining that the fear of being alone makes people remain in bad relationships but being alone is not bad; it only makes you re-discover yourself (paraphrased).

The disappointing thing for me, however, was that the movie was predictable. It had followed that usual pattern – a big fight towards the end, “kiss and make-up” and certain decisions being made. I had expected those and I was not disproved. A bit of unpredictability would have been welcomed.

Notwithstanding, as a chic flick, this is one movie you should enjoy with your girlfriends and probably plan your own girls’ trip to rekindle, re-bond and re-ignite that wild side. The guys are not left out. I am quite confident that my men would enjoy this, *wink *wink.
