Revue of BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN)”
Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself about Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor) who targets a young girl named Cass. Consequently Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya – an unlikely foursome – team up to take Roman down and save Cass.
I had high hopes about Birds of Prey especially because of Margot Robbie’s performance in Suicide Squad and I wasn’t disappointed because she is the highlight of the whole film. You can’t help but fall in love with her maniacal but endearing character. In Birds Of Prey, we discover that Harley has broken up with Mr. J aka, The Joker and she now has to carve a niche for herself outside Joker’s world and carve a niche she did!
However, I am sad to report that the performance of Margot is the highlight of this film as almost everything else is a mess. The other characters have little or no impact or influence on the whole film…I dare say, they were all boring and we simply didn’t connect with them. Ewan McGregor made for a rather childish villain and is quite an insult to the Black Mask character. Moreover, he was only black mask for like 10 seconds and was vanquished with so much ease that it was unbelievable…and ridiculous.
Can someone tell me how Black Canary got her killer voice because somehow this film fails to tell us how she acquired that vocal ability. Another thing the film may have forgotten to tell us is where was Batman while Harley was busy wreaking havoc in Gotham. Lastly, why is there a Hyena in this film? There was literally no use for the animal.
Honestly, the joy of Birds of Prey laid heavily on the performance of Harley and nothing more. Even though she did well, it did get kind of tiring after a bit especially as there was nothing more of interest in the film. The fight scenes were fair and had some sprinkling of violence but seemed a little bare and the support cast weren’t as good. Also, I noticed that there was a lot of kick to the nuts…did someone say feminism?
The plot is childish and messy with more holes than swiss cheese and it just got worse as the film progressed – I kept expecting more and it kept disappointing me.
Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn isn’t as good and even though they copied Marvel’s narration style (by Michael Pena) still has some good scenes and a few call-backs to Suicide Squad.
