Revue of ESCAPE ROOM
Escape Room is about six adventurous strangers who travel to a mysterious building to experience the escape room — a game where players compete to solve a series of puzzles to win $10,000. However, what starts out as a fun experience degenerates into a sadistic and nightmarish experience that could cost them their lives.
Even though Escape Room is just like other films of its ilk but what makes it different is how beautiful the elaborate traps that make up the Escape Room. Maybe I am a sadistic person but the traps were complex and well thought out and immersive so much so that the audience can feel the peril that characters are facing. For instance, there was a room where the heat was unbearable and the even in the coolness of the cinema screen, the heat radiated from the screens.
Another thing that worked for this film is that unlike other survival films, there wasn’t so much emphasis on the horror or gore making the film appeal to a wider audience. Other survival films get their scare from showing gory deaths or its characters but Escape Room didn’t rely on gore for its scares but rather relied on the characters acting skills to convey the jolt.
That said, Escape Room faltered when it began to set us up for a sequel because from there it derailed and lost its plot. I understand the commercial sense in making a sequel but at least try and finish the first one on a high which will have audiences longing for a second installment. The climax of the film was so far-fetched and implausible that it robbed the film of its wow factor.
