Revue of IT CHAPTER 2
IT Chapter 2 occurs 27 years after being defeated by the losers club in the first part . This time, Pennywise returns to the town of Derry to exert his revenge on the losers club who have returned to defeat him once and for all.
I am a huge fan of this Stephen King classic and couldn’t wait for its release to scare the crap outta myself. So, was IT scary? Of course, it was! There were genuinely scary scenes that will make you jump out of your skin especially when Pennywise took any of his numerous monstrous forms. Some of the forms are disgusting and disturbing and many will prey on your phobias such as the fear of insects, blood and being buried alive. The producers were able to achieve this real scare factor with very good visual effects and decent story telling.
Talking about the plot, IT Chapter 2 had a fairly good storyline even though I had reservations with the way they introduced some really important information that we were unaware of all this while. For instance, Beverly Marsh (Jessica Chastain) now experiences visions due to her exposure to the deadlights from her encounter with Pennywise. This information plays an important role and we are just getting to find out now? How convenient! That actually is my major issue with IT Chapter 2 – there were one too many convenient events in the process of building its plot and this dulled its punch.
Similarly, the scare factor was dulled by the introduction of an awful lot of comedy in the scripting. I know that comedy sells but if I wanted to laugh, I would go to see Good Boys. I came here to be scared silly and there was absolutely no reason to litter the film with laughs especially after a very scary scene. Another disappointing thing in the film is how Pennywise was vanquished. Apparently, the producers of this film never heard of the age old saying that sticks and stones may break my bones, but words don’t. I don’t want to drop any spoilers but I can assure you they didn’t use sticks and stones to kill Pennywise.
IT Chapter 2 had some significant cameos and references to some other horror films. I don’t intend to spoil it for you but do keep your eyes peeled for a very important character who will have a less-than-subtle scene. Another thing I liked is that the producers managed to get the original losers club to reprise their roles. Although the de-aging CGI was a bit dodgy it was manageable.
IT Chapter 2 is very scary but also had some tender moments and I enjoyed it so much and recommend that you go see it and s**t your pants.
Have an awesome day today.
