Revue of MA

Octavia Spencer is Sue Ann aka Ma, a lonely veterinary nurse who allows kids in the basement of her home for drinking sprees but with a few house rules: One of the kids must stay sober. Don’t curse. Never go upstairs. And call her “Ma”. However, her benevolence comes with dire consequences…

The trailer of this film piqued my interest because we all know Octavia is one sweet lady so seeing her a villain was very exciting to me. So how did she do? She did a magnificent job as the sweet lady down to the road and then switched to the maniacal and blood curdling villain. Due to the trailer, the audience was always suspicious of her all but we still never expected that switch to a cold hearted killer and she shows us why she won that Oscar.

Honestly, Octavia’s performance is the highlight of the whole film because the plot of the film is rather cheesy and the use of trauma as motivation for her villainy is rather weak and inadequate for the audience to invest in. Also, the film stretched for long periods and really came to life in the last 20 minutes when Octavia’s evil side came out. Even at that, there weren’t enough scary scenes to satisfy the horror heads like me. There was this one scene though between Octavia and Luke Evans character that will get you squirming in your chair, but other than that, there wasn’t must scare in Ma.

Ma does have some intense scenes and Octavia is fantastic in the lead role (rather than her usual supporting roles) but isn’t the horror fest we were promised. Meanwhile, I once watched an interview some years ago where Octavia said she had acted the role of a nurse a whooping sixteen times! Who else do you know that appears typecast for certain roles? Hit me up on Twitter and Facebook.

Have a great week!
