This tale of self-discovery is centered on Chiron, an African American who is struggling to understand himself and his sexuality. It is a story of how he struggles with his sexuality while navigating the tough life of the streets and the abuse of his homophobic friends and junkie single mother (Naomie Harris).

Moonlight has been nominated for a retinue of awards (including 8 Oscars) and that got me curious to find out why. I had not seen a trailer or a synopsis on the movie so I basically I went in blind with no inkling of what the film was about. So when the movie started with thugs and gangsters in the hood, I quickly thought it was going to be one of those movies about racism…I couldn’t be more wrong.

A movie about a gay African American is not a story I had ever seen (or contemplated) so I couldn’t predict where this one was going. It turned out to be an intense and moving story about a guy who felt out of place in the society. The story was spun in a poetic manner that will reverberate with a lot of people who feel misunderstood and will evoke powerful emotions in the audience.

That being said, I didn’t particularly enjoy the movie and this isn’t because of the gay theme of the movie, but because it just wasn’t that entertaining. The cast gave a really great performance though and the portrayal of Chiron’s struggles was quite profound.

The thing about such movies is that they split audiences because there would be people who can relate and those who are put off. For me I am kind of on the fence about it because I wasn’t that entertained. Consequently, Moonlight earns 6.8/10 score on my awesome-o-metre, largely due to the performance of the cast.
