REVUE OF YOUR EXCELLENCY
Your Excellency stars Akin Lewis as Chief Olalekan Ajadi – the most unlikely candidate who decides to run for president. The social media scene is thrown into a frenzy as it seems that he just might win it as they begin to believe it is possible for an outsider to aspire to the highest public office.
I was lucky I didn’t see Your Excellency when it came to cinemas because I would have been really annoyed at the waste of 2 hours of my life that I will never get back. What was this all about? How can one premise a whole film on social media in politics? The funny thing is that the producers knew that this plot is unconvincing and will not work so they sold the film with the tag line “What’s politics without a party” to deceive viewers into thinking that Your Excellency is going to be another Wedding Party or Chief Daddy, what a sham!
I seem to be ranting so let me get into the specifics of it. Your Excellency is disjointed and literally has no real plot direction whatsoever. This incoherence is made obvious by the retinue of unnecessary characters and unnecessary scenes. All the characters are at parallels, telling different stories that didn’t make any real sense or point to a specific plot direction and the producers attempt at tying these characters together failed miserably. I have seen many Nollywood films who have tried to pass off a mash up of Instagram skits as a movie but this one doesn’t even manage to pull that off. To be honest, after the film, you will be left confused trying to decipher what the whole idea of the film is.
Did I mention that this film had NO CONFLICT WHATSOEVER? So imagine watching a film with nothing to look forward to. There is supposed to be a conflict between Shaffy Bello’s character and Funke Akindele’s character for the position of the First lady but that conflict is so uninteresting that it whimpered and died with no real impact whatsoever.
I understand that Your Excellency is supposed to be a comedy but there aren’t any real laughs in it and the few attempts are cringy and forced. To try to boost the comedy, the producers shoe horned so many irrelevant characters like Emma Oh My God, who literally had no role in the film or even the scene that featured Falz had no use and wasn’t funny to say the least.
The only good thing in Your Excellency is the coloring and production but Nollywood has come too far to try to pass off good post production as a good film. Other than the good coloring and probably lighting, there was literally nothing good about Your Excellency.
Your Excellency claims to be a political satire but honestly, it only made a mockery of itself. So if you have data to waste and want to see Your Excellency, it is currently streaming on Netflix.
