Red Sparrow is based on the book by Jason Matthews and stars Jennifer Lawrence as an ex Ballerina Dominika Egorova who after a freak accident on stage can no longer ply her trade that pays for her mother’s health bills. To cater for her ailing mother, she enrolls as a sparrow- a secret Russian agency that targets political adversaries by preying on their desires. When she is teamed with an American Agent Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton), things become a complicated and the race for her life begins.

Jennifer Lawrence wants us to know that she has arrived as an actress that should be taken seriously as she emerges from the cocoon that is the Hunger Games. This is supposed to be the film that announces Jlaw as an actress with versatility and intensity that the world must take notice of. So, did she succeed? Well, errr not exactly. Let me explain. Jlaw’s character attempts to be the quintessential femme fetal using guile and her sex allure to charm her targets but quite honestly, her character didn’t seem convincing enough. However, I must commend her thinly veiled Russian accent which seemed authentic and I must note her nude scenes which were risqué but honestly, it takes more than an excessive show of skin to convince me.

But the plot (as adapted from the Jason Mathew Novel) wasn’t half bad. It reeks of good old spy films with each party trying to outwit the other. However, there were times when I attempted a quick zzzzzz because the scenes were rather drawn and didn’t seem to be going anywhere real quick. But I must warn that if you aren’t a die-hard espionage fan, you may leave the cinema feeling disappointed.

Red Sparrow is supposed to be Jlaw’s coming of age film but it’s not the sexy thriller it had the porential to be. Also, you will need to brace yourself for quite a lot of nudity and some wince inducing scenes of torture, rape and knacks. But if you are into that kind of thing, then go see Red Sparrow by clicking HERE to purchase your cheap movie ticket.
